Hot jets are known to undergo a transition from convective to absoluteinstability as the temperature ratio between the jet and the ambientmedium exceeds a critical value. DNS indicate that such a transitiongives rise to intrinsic self-sustained oscillations which may beregarded as a nonlinear global mode beating at a well defined frequency.Furthermore, the frequency may be predicted by applying the selectioncriterion of Couairon & Chomaz. The sound radiated by this global modewill be shown to be dipolar and to result from the acceleration ofenthalpy inhomogeneities.
